Our Story
Njia Panda — meaning "crossroads" in Swahili — was born from a vision to create a tented lodge that honours the raw beauty of Karatu while offering travellers a place of true rest and connection. Set at the foot of the Ngorongoro Highlands, the lodge was established by a family deeply rooted in the Tanzanian landscape.
What began as a modest gathering of tents amid the forest has grown into a beloved retreat — a place where guests arrive as strangers and leave as part of the Njia Panda story. The lodge remains family-run, guided by the belief that genuine hospitality and responsible stewardship of the land go hand in hand.
The founding family pitched the first canvas tents amid the Karatu forest canopy, welcoming a handful of travellers drawn by word of mouth and a genuine love of the land.
Our Story
From the beginning, Njia Panda's focus was on offering an immersive, nature-first experience. Guests could walk out of their tents and into the forest, listen to the birds at dawn, and watch the mist lift off the Ngorongoro highlands each morning. The lodge became known for its personal touch — owners who cooked, guided, and sat around the fire with their guests.
In 2015, the lodge expanded with a full restaurant, swimming pool, and a dedicated spa — all built in harmony with the surrounding environment, using local materials and employing artisans from the Karatu community.

In 2018, Njia Panda took a significant step in its commitment to the local community by formalising its employment and training programme. Today, over 90% of the lodge's team are from Karatu and the surrounding villages — each bringing with them knowledge, warmth, and a pride in sharing their home with visitors from around the world.
The lodge partners with local schools, supports women-led craft cooperatives, and invests in reforestation projects within the Ngorongoro Buffer Zone — ensuring that every guest's visit contributes directly to the wellbeing of the land and its people.

Our Story
As custodians of the forest highland of Karatu, our responsibility is to preserve and develop sustainably. Conservation management is the foundation on which Njia Panda was established, and will always be a priority. The lodge has been a pioneer of eco-tourism in the Karatu area, demonstrating that luxury and responsibility are not opposites — they are partners.

Today, the grounds of Njia Panda bear little resemblance to the modest clearing where the first tents were pitched. The forest has been lovingly tended — new trees planted, invasive species cleared, and native flora encouraged to return. The birdlife is richer than ever, and guests are regularly treated to sightings of colobus monkeys, bush babies, and dozens of endemic bird species. And this is happening every day.
