Conservation

Conserving Ancient Landscapes
for Future Generations

Our Commitment

Conservation is the Foundation
On Which Njia Panda Was Built

At Njia Panda, conservation is not a marketing word โ€” it is the reason the lodge exists. Every guest who stays with us contributes directly to the protection of the Karatu highland ecosystem, the reforestation of native forest, the empowerment of local communities, and the long-term preservation of the landscapes that make Northern Tanzania one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

Our Pillars

Three Commitments That
Guide Everything We Do

๐ŸŒฟ

Ecosystem Protection

We actively manage and restore the native forest surrounding the lodge โ€” removing invasive species, planting indigenous trees, and maintaining wildlife corridors that connect the Ngorongoro buffer zone with the broader highland ecosystem.

๐Ÿค

Community Empowerment

Over 90% of our team are from Karatu and surrounding villages. We invest in local schools, support women-led cooperatives, and ensure that tourism revenue circulates within the community rather than leaving it.

Responsible Operations

Solar power, rainwater harvesting, composting, and a zero-single-use-plastic policy are built into the fabric of how we run the lodge. Our kitchen sources from local farms. Our waste is managed on-site. Our footprint is deliberately small.

Forest conservation

Our Story

Restoring the
Highland Forest

The forest that surrounds Njia Panda today bears little resemblance to the degraded scrubland that existed when the lodge was first established. Over years of methodical planting, monitoring, and protection, native species have returned โ€” fig trees, crotons, and highland podocarpus that now shelter colobus monkeys, bushbuck, and over 200 species of birds.

Our reforestation programme plants a minimum of 500 indigenous trees per year on lodge land and in the surrounding community buffer zone. Guests are welcome to participate in a tree-planting activity during their stay.

Our Story

Empowering the
Karatu Community

Conservation without community is incomplete. The Iraqw people of Karatu have been stewards of this highland landscape for centuries โ€” their traditional land management practices, their knowledge of medicinal plants, and their relationship with the forest are part of the ecosystem we are working to protect.

Every year, a percentage of lodge revenue is directed to a community fund that supports school infrastructure, bursaries for secondary education, and seed capital for women-led small businesses in the area. We believe that the best conservation strategy is one that gives local people a genuine stake in the health of the land around them.

Our Story

Conservation
in Daily Practice

The lodge operates on solar power supplemented by a backup generator that runs for less than two hours per day. Rainwater is harvested and filtered for lodge use. Our kitchen garden grows herbs, greens, and edible flowers that appear on the restaurant menu each evening. Food waste is composted and returned to the garden. Grey water is treated and used to irrigate the grounds.

These are not exceptional measures โ€” they are simply the way a responsible lodge should operate. We share this approach openly with every guest, because we believe transparency is as important as action.
