Set off at dawn in a 4x4 safari vehicle with one of our expert local guides and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater — one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet. Within its ancient volcanic walls you will encounter lion prides, elephant herds, black rhino, hippos, and the vast grassland herds of wildebeest and zebra. For those seeking more, we arrange multi-day extensions into the boundless plains of the Serengeti to witness the Great Migration in season.

Step beyond the lodge gates and into the living forest of the Karatu highlands. Our guided walks take you along ancient elephant trails and through stands of fig trees, their roots clutching the red volcanic soil. Your guide will point out medicinal plants used by the Iraqw people for generations, identify the calls of endemic birds hidden in the canopy, and share the stories of the forest that no safari vehicle can reach.
Morning walks are particularly magical — the air cool, the mist still hanging in the trees, and the forest alive with movement.

The fertile volcanic soils of the Karatu highlands produce some of Tanzania's finest Arabica coffee. A guided tour of a working coffee farm takes you from seedling to cup — watching the farmers tend their plants on the crater rim slopes, learning the traditional wet-processing method, and finally tasting freshly brewed coffee in the shade of banana trees with a view across the valley below.

The forest and farmland mosaic around Njia Panda supports over 350 species within a short walk or drive of the lodge — including the stunning Hartlaub's turaco, the endemic Usambiro barbet, Fischer's lovebird, and the spectacular crowned crane feeding in the highland meadows at dusk.
