Discover Karatu
Perched at 2,000 metres in the fertile highlands of Northern Tanzania, Karatu is one of East Africa's most underrated destinations. Surrounded by coffee and wheat farms, ancient forests, and the sweeping rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, it sits at the crossroads of the region's greatest wilderness areas — making Njia Panda the perfect base for travellers who want to experience everything the north has to offer, without the bustle of the tourist trail.
Plan Your VisitDestination
More than just a transit point, Karatu is a vibrant highland town with its own distinct character. The local market buzzes with colour each morning — farmers selling coffee, avocados, and fresh flowers grown on the fertile volcanic soils of the crater highlands. The streets are lined with workshops, local restaurants, and the sounds of Swahili carried on a cool mountain breeze.
Staying at Njia Panda puts you right in the heart of this community — close enough to explore, peaceful enough to truly rest.
Destination
Just one hour from Njia Panda, the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on earth. A collapsed volcanic caldera stretching 260 square kilometres, it shelters over 25,000 animals within its walls year-round — including the highest density of lions in Africa, vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and the endangered black rhino.
Unlike many wildlife destinations, the crater requires no long drive — you descend in minutes and find yourself surrounded by Africa in its most concentrated, breathtaking form.
Destination
Karatu sits at the western edge of the road to the Serengeti — the world's greatest wildlife reserve and home to the legendary Great Migration, where over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move across the plains in an ancient seasonal rhythm. Whether you join a day excursion or extend your adventure with a multi-day safari, the Serengeti is unlike anywhere else on earth.
Our team can arrange seamless transfers, private game drives, and fly-in options from Karatu to the heart of the Serengeti — tailored to your schedule and interests.
Destination
Few safari destinations offer the kind of authentic cultural immersion that Karatu does. The highlands surrounding the lodge are home to thriving Iraqw communities whose ancestors have farmed this land for centuries. Walk through working coffee and banana farms, visit a local school, or join a guided cultural tour to a traditional village — experiences that leave a deeper impression than any game drive.
Our guides — all from the local area — speak the language, know the families, and share the stories that never make it into the guidebooks.

A short drive from Karatu, Lake Manyara National Park is a compact but wonderfully diverse wildlife area. Famously known for its tree-climbing lions and vast flocks of flamingos that paint its alkaline shores pink, the park also shelters large elephant herds, hippo pools, and one of Tanzania's richest concentrations of bird life — over 400 species recorded within its boundaries.
The park makes an ideal half-day trip, easily combined with a visit to the Karatu market in the afternoon before returning to the lodge for sundowners around the pool.
